SAINT LUIS REY CIGAR HISTORY
Does the name of the Saint Luis Rey cigar brand refer to the "San Luis" region in the Vuelta Abajo, where some of the world's finest Cuban cigar tobacco is grown, hence the name of the "King of San Luis"? Or is this Cuban cigar's name based on a reference to the popular 1927 novel by American author Thornton Wilder, The Bridge of San Luis Rey? In either case, the Saint Luis Rey cigar brand was created in 1938 and leans toward the lighter side in strength.
Saint Louis Rey was registered in 1927 under the name of Zamora and Guerra. Despite its success, it disappeared and vanished in the oblivion up to the moment of its renaissance in 1940, under the impulse of a British cigar import company. However, is in 1980 when the Series A enters the international Cuban cigar market with great strength.
Nowadays, Saint Luis Rey cigars are manufactured in the same factory where the Romeo y Julieta cigars are made. It is located at 852 Belascoain Street.
Leaves from Vuelta Abajo, Pinar del Rio are used in the cigar production. The cigarettes from Saint Luis Rey are characterized by a mid softness, in terms of aroma, taste and strength. They include hand made and machine produced vitolas. It is not a very demanded Habano brand, but it has a established market.
The Saint Luis Rey cigars are commercialized in Canada, Caribbean countries, Mexico, Africa, Middle East, Swiss, and the Far East.
