BOLIVAR CIGAR HISTORY
The Bolivar cigar brand was introduced in 1901. The powerful flavour of the Bolivar cigar range is almost as widely know as it's namesake, Simon Bolivar (1783-1830), the celebrated Venezuelan warrior who liberated all or part of what is today Venezuela, Columbia, Peru and Bolivia. This Cuban cigar brand was developed by the Jose Rocha Company and manufactured at the El Crepusculo factory, but Bolivar was later acquired by Menendez, Garcia y Cia.
In 1927, the Spanish industrialist Jose F. Rocha registered a cigar trademark with the name of the liberator Simón Bolivar.
In 1944, it was acquired by Cifuentes, the Cuban cigar company owning Partagás, and since then it was a member of the group of trademarks produced in that well know Cifuentes factory. The Bolivar tobacco comes from Vuelta Abajo (Pinar del Río) and some of the wrappers from Havana province. This fine Cuban cigar is distinguished by its character, its strength, somewhere between mid and strong, its nice flavor and its pleasant aroma.
Most of the Bolivar cigars have dark cigar wrappers with reddish tones. There are over 20 models of Bolivar cigars on the Cuban cigar market at the moment. The Bolivar Coronas Gigantes (Churchill) and Bolivar Inmensas (Lonsdale) stand out and range among the best cigars of the Bolivar trademark; as much as the Gold Medal (Lonsdale), a cigar easily identifiable by the golden wrapper which enfolds half of the cigar.
General Cigars owns the commercial rights of the Bolivar cigars since 1983. The Bolivar cigars are commercialized in Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, The Far East, Africa and the Middle East.
